Highly recommended by me, this movie indeed teach us a lot about lessons of life. A banker, Andy Dufrense (I think that is how the surname is spelt)who was condemned to prison for many years (I do not know much about the sentence as the judge said that 2years back to back for each bullet that he fired on his wife and her lover; 8 bullets each)in Shawshank Prison. There he befriended a man called "Red" (Morgan Freeman) who also commit murder and was already in there for 10 years and his parole was rejected. At first, they were solely business partners, whereby Andy requested a purchase of rock hammer and later on a poster of some superstar at that time. But, on and on, they became fast friend.
In actual, Andy is innocent but as he was at the wrong place and at a wrong time, he was sentenced to such a brutal punishment (he was raped, beaten and all); however, as a ex-banker, he managed to finger his way around the administration there, including Hadley and warden Norton. He even managed to build the best library ever built in any prisons and educated some prisoners who wanted to obtain a degree.
It has been 19 years before he found his strike of luck. A young man by the name of Tommy was caught B & E (which is burglary and entering)and was sent to this prison as well. A young man with a young wife and a daughter willed him to learn and get a degree. However, his attempts were futile as he was shot by Hadley as warden Norton did not wanted to let go such an asset to him. Tommy told Andy that he knew who killed Andy's wife and her lover and would even go to the length of giving a testimonial in court. When Andy knew of this fact, he went to warden Norton which is a fatal mistake indeed, which indirectly caused the death of poor young Tommy. But, I guess we cannot blame him as he was full of hope of being free again, enjoying what life has to offer.
In the end, he managed to escape from Shawshank Prison out of desperation or perhaps the death of Tommy had driven him to the max. Anyway, when he requested a rock hammer from Red, he did not know he would utilized it for his escape. It was just that he stumbled upon some wet and fragile slab in his cell, thus, beggining his plan for escape. The huge poster is in fact, a camouflage of the tunnel that he was working upon for all these years.
Upon his escapade, he succeded in gaining all the warden's illegal money and went to a small town in Mexico. Before he departed, he told Red about a secret hiding in which he would like Red to get it if he managed to get out. It turned out to be some money in which he can go find his friend and build a new life there.
